Editing FAQ
What Types of Manuscripts Do You Edit?
• We accept Novels, Novellas and Short Stories
• All word counts accepted
• We specialize in the following genres and subgenres: science fiction, fantasy and horror
• You can always inquire whether your manuscript is suitable for our editing service by emailing us at editing@moonriser.com
Why Do We Use 2 Different Editors for Each Book?
The answer is simple: it is a fact that editing done by only one person is much more likely to allow mistakes to slip by. In essence, it could be considered a waste of your money and quite a disservice. Beware of single-person edits! By having 2 editors for each book, we drastically reduce the chance of any errors sneaking past, giving you a much more refined finished product.
How Should I Format My Manuscript for Editing?
Simply leave clear paragraph breaks using blank lines. That's it!
We are professionals. You are hiring us to edit your manuscript and format the final product. It would be ridiculous for an editor or publisher to ask you to worry about APA, MLA, Chicago,
font sizes, margins, indentations, etc. We will format your document for you, that's partly what you have hired us to do! Sit back, enjoy and don't frustrate yourself battling your wordprocessor over arcane publishing practices
that should have been abolished with the invention of the computer.
NOTE:
Requiring an author to format their document to a specific style is an old control mechanism.
This was, and sadly still is, used by publishers and editors to elicit a formal submission process which is forced onto writers because it used to be necessary during the time of the
mechanical press! If we cannot format your document professionally in a timely manner for you, we should not be working in the industry.
How Long Will the Editing Process Take?
The editing process will require 1 day for every 10,000 words in your manuscript, rounded up, plus 1 day for analysis reports and formatting. For example, if you submitted a 76,000-word manuscript, the editing period would be 9 days.
How Do I Get Started?
To get started, simply send us an email to editing@moonriser.com with your real name, the size of your manuscript and the genre / subgenre (i.e. science fiction, fantasy or horror).
We will check the availability of editors who deal with your genre and get back to you with a proposed start and end date, including pricing information. If you agree to the terms, you will then send us an email attachment of your manuscript in .doc or .docx format, along with your proper name and address.
Payment must be made in full prior to the beginning of the editing period agreed upon.
Communication During Editing
There are times during the editing procedure when the editors may wish to contact the writer with questions. You must supply an email address that you check regularly. Communication is
vital to the editing process. The faster you respond, the better the final product. The reverse is also true if you have any questions. Simply email your query to editing@moonriser.com
and you will receive a response from one of the editors working on your manuscript the same day (usually within the hour).
Once your edit begins, you will receive the contact email addresses of the two specific editors assigned to your manuscript. You may contact either of these editors directly instead of
using the general editing@moonriser.com email account.
What Do I Get with the Finished Product?
You will receive 2 copies of your original manuscript, one which will include major structural and grammatical edits highlighted in red for your own records that will allow you to identify the changes. The second copy will be the newly formatted and edited version. You will also receive 2 analysis reports - one from each editor - with editing notes, story-related points and a general manuscript review.
If I Submitted a Novel, Will You Format My Manuscript for Publishing?
Yes.
If you have sent us your novel, including the title page, copyright information, publisher information, ISBN, dedications, prologue and anything else included with the actual manuscript,
we will format it so that it is ready for publishing at no extra cost.
What Languages Do You Edit?
Currently, we only edit in English.
Please state whether you wish your manuscript to be based on Canadian, American or British spelling.
What Geographic Regions Do You Accept Clients From?
Worldwide.
